What’s the Best Fabric for Custom Tees?

What’s the Best Fabric for Custom Tees?

Ring-Spun Cotton, Tri-Blend, Heavyweight, Lightweight & More Explained

When you’re designing a custom T-shirt, what it says matters. But what it’s made of? That’s just as important. The right fabric can make or break how your tee feels, fits, and lasts.

Whether you’re ordering one shirt or a hundred, here’s your no-fluff guide to choosing the perfect T-shirt fabric.

Ring-Spun Cotton: The Gold Standard

Best for: Everyday wear, gifting, softness lovers

Ring-spun cotton is the go-to for most custom tees, and for good reason. It’s made by twisting and thinning the cotton strands, which makes the fabric softer, smoother, and more durable than regular cotton.

Why we love it:

  • Incredibly soft (seriously, it’s buttery)

  • Holds up well over time

  • Great surface for printing

This is our default fabric for a reason: it checks all the boxes.

Tri-Blend: Soft, Stretchy, and Vintage-Looking

Best for: Fitted looks, athletic wear, vintage lovers

Tri-blend fabric combines cotton, polyester, and rayon. The result? A dreamy tee that’s super soft, drapey, and slightly heathered for that worn-in look.

Why we love it:

  • Ultra-soft with a flattering fit

  • Lightweight and breathable

  • Subtle texture gives it character

Perfect for designs that pair well with a laid-back vibe or retro aesthetic.

Heavyweight Cotton: Durable & Structured

Best for: Streetwear, workwear, oversized fits

Heavyweight tees use thicker cotton (often 6 oz or more), giving them a more structured feel. They’re less about stretch and more about substance.

Why we love it:

  • Feels premium and substantial

  • Great for bold prints and street-style looks

  • Built to last (and layer)

If you like that boxy, skater-style fit, this is the fabric for you.

Lightweight Cotton: Airy & Easygoing

Best for: Summer wear, layering, relaxed fits

Lightweight tees (typically under 5 oz) are breezy, casual, and ideal for warm weather or layering under hoodies and jackets.

Why we love it:

  • Cool and breathable

  • Great for casual or tropical vibes

  • Feels like your favorite old tee

Not as thick, but definitely comfy. Just don’t expect it to be super structured.

What About Preshrunk vs Not?

Most of our tees are preshrunk, so what you see is what you get. But it’s always smart to check the care tag and size up if you're between sizes, especially for 100% cotton shirts.

So… What’s The Best?

It depends on what you're going for:

If you want... Go with...
All-around comfort Ring-spun cotton
Soft & stylish Tri-blend
Thick & boxy Heavyweight cotton
Light & breezy Lightweight cotton

And if you’re still unsure? Don’t worry, we’ve tested and printed on all of them. Just shoot us a message with your idea and we’ll help you pick the perfect fit.
